Mr. Ridge - last gimlet hand-forgerMr. Ridge's smithy was tucked away in a corner of the 'Wallet End', but was still functional at the end of the 1960s. Mr. Ridge, then in his nineties, was still turning out hand-forged gimlets as his ancestors had done since the mid 19th century. In 1851 the various branches of the Ridge family monopolised the brace-bit and gimlet manufacture in the village. |
