Ecclesfield has always been well supplied with public houses. The Griffin Inn makes up the third of the trio clustered around Stocks Hill. As was customary in the early days of photography, a large crowd has assembled in order to have their pictures taken.

The building just to the right of the pub was for many years the public library.
